Jean Sylvain Bailly (1736 – 1793) – astronomer and leader of the French Revolution, first president of the Constituent Assembly and mayor of Paris; constitutionalist. The revolution pulled him out of the peaceful sphere and transferred him to the very center of political life. Elected from the city of Paris as a deputy of the third estate to the States General, he became president of the states, and when they were transformed into a National Constituent Assembly, his first president. It was he who led the deputies during the oath in the Ballroom; As President of the Constituent Assembly, he, in the face of threats and ridicule, firmly carried out the decree of September 27, 1791 (confirmed on November 30 of the same year) on the equality of Jews. Appointed mayor of Paris after the capture of the Bastille, he corrected his position with incorruptible honesty until November 1791.
