RARE BOMBARDEMENT ET PRISE D'ALGER EARLY 19TH C FRENCH ANTIQUE HAND COLORED WithB
RARE’BOMBARDEMENT ET PRISE D’ALGER. {OR’THE BOMBARDMENT & TAKING OF ALGIERS’} EARLY 19TH CENTURY FR EN CH ANTIQUE HAND COLORED LARGE FOLIO WOODBLOCK. PUBLISHED BY JEAN-CHARLES PELLERIN (IMAGERIE D’EPINAL). [Unframed & previously laid-down on mill board, w/some paper gathering & minor foxing along the center, middle crease of woodblock print]. Early 19th century antique Fr en ch large folio hand colored historical woodblock prints. Backing board: 25 1? 2″ Width x 20 1? 2″ Height. Paper margins: 25″ Width x 16 1? 2″ Height. Pictorial image only: 20 3? 4″ Height x 12 1? 2″ Height. It’s titled in Fr en ch’Bombardement Et Prise D’Alger’ or’The Bombardment and Taking of Algiers’ in English. The print was published by the well-known Fr en ch publisher Jean-Charles Pellerin and his printing concern’Imagerie D’Epinal. It may have originally been in a large bound portfolio, since it was creased down the middle of the woodblock print on heavy paper, with some foxing/tanning along the mentioned crease, toward the top center of the print where this occurs. Aside from some slight paper edge interruptions along the margins of the paper (minor tears and creasing) the woodblock print, now approaching 200 years in age, is still in fairly well-preserved overall antique condition. It doesn’t suffer from any depreciating overall tanning, water stains or significant damage, paper tears, loss or other injuries. It was found in an estate in metropolitan Boston, Massachusetts and is in’as-found,’ untouched, undisturbed condition. It was at some point previously and some time ago, removed from the initial portfolio or large format volume containing it and laid down with fixative on what appears to be mid-19th century pressed paper pulp mill board, used as backing for the print to be laid down upon. This was only performed to apparently secure the woodblock print for viewing and was done only somewhat successfully, in that there’s some slight to moderate episodes of gathering of the print’s paper on the board, where the fixative didn’t take or had failed. It still has wonderful, vibrant and fairly undiminished, hand-painted coloring of the hand set woodblock print. This woodblock would be a candidate for a professional paper restorer, who would have the faculties and the experience to remove the woodblock print from the backing board and to remove the episodes of tanning that occur on the print. It then could be properly matted and framed, using 100% cotton rag, archival presentation materials, in order to ensure it would last and continue to be enjoyed for many more years. A simply wonderful early 19th century Fr en ch woodblock print, loaded with action and capturing the Fr en ch bombardment of the Ottoman Empire’s fortifications and Fr en ch invasion at the Mediterranean port city of Algiers in Algeria, North Africa in 1830 by the Fr en ch Naval forces, with several Fr en ch gunships involved in the siege. Fair to Good overall antique condition.
