Antique Auquatint Drypoint c 1920’s by French Artist Glen Paul Framed in Antique Wood Frame. This is a Beautiful French Original Auquatint Drypoint done by Artist Glen Paul of Moulin Debray Windmill in France. It is framed in an Antique Gold Gilt Wood Frame and is under glass. Backed with paper and has writing on the back in pen that says Bahe, bought 1924 and some initials. It is in Great Antique condition with a small amount of foxing to the woven paper and some small scratches and scuffs here and there all around on the Antique wood frame some wear to the corners as well. There is an eye screw someone added at the top as well. Printed upon wove paper and with full margins as created by the artist between 1920 and 1925. Bearing the pencil signed pseudonym,’Paul Trelade’, which the artist employed during this time. Several very faint foxing marks are evident in the outer margins, else a fine, deeply printed impression with strong, unfaded colours and in excellent condition throughout. Eugene Paul (Gen Paul) an original aquatint and dry point Moulin Debray Windmill, France. Gen Paul signed all of his works of art with pseudonym,’Paul Trelade’ until 1925 when signed his works with the now familiar,’Gen Paul’, which, in fact, is another pseudonym for his name Eugene Paul. Most of of Gen Paul’s earlier etchings, drypoints and aquatints were not published in specifically numbered editions. It is therefore not known how many impressions of Moulin Debray were created. Most of his prints from this time, however, are quite scarce and it would thus be a surprise to know that more than forty of these were created. Gen Paul’Eugene Paul’ Montmartre (Paris), 1895 – 1975. Original Color Aquatint and Drypoint. Gen Paul (Eugene Paul, pseudonym,’Paul Trelade’). A leading artist of the’Ecole de Montmartre’, Gen Paul was born there at 96 de la rue Lepic, which was a house painted by Vincent Van Gogh. He was severely wounded twice and on the second occasion lost his leg. At about this time he was also introduced to printmaking techniques by Eugene Delatre. Apart from that, Gen Paul received no formal art training. His first exhibited painting, a view of the Moulin de la Galette, was shown in Paris in 1916. After 1925, however, Gen Paul (Eugene Paul), began developing a unique form of expressionism that promoted a sense of motion through strong diagonals and clashing elements of abstraction and realism. Thus some art historians consider his work from this period to be a precursor of the 1950’s abstract expressionist movement. Of equal importance, his expressionism portrayed a joy of life and innovation and thus stood in opposition to the more despairing art of the twentieth century school of German expressionism and of such French expressionist contemporaries as Chaim Soutine and Georges Rouault. Gen Paul was a regular exhibitor at Paris’s Salon d’automne and the Salon des independants from 1920 until his death. In 1934 the French government awarded him the Legion d’honneur and in 1937 he was commissioned to paint a large fresco in the Pavilion des vins de France for Paris’s International Exposition. During the 1930’s Celine requested Gen Paul to illustrate two of his most famous novels. Voyage au bout de la nuit. (Journey to the End of the Night) and. (Death on the Instalment Plan). Perhaps because of Darius Milhaud’s influence, Gen Paul (Eugene Paul), developed a strong interest in both contemporary classical music and jazz, and travelled to the United States to portray scenes of music and musicians there. Today the fine art of Gen Paul will be found in many international collections. Within Europe his art will be found in public museums in Berne and Granville and in the Musee d’art moderne de la ville de Paris. The actual plate image is 6 1/8″ in width x 8 1/38″ in height. Framed piece is 10 1/2″ x 12 1/2″. I Love to go to Auctions, Estate Sales and Garage Sales. I find Oddities, Unique and Collectible items.
